I+/I−: The Self-Worth Coordinate System Underneath Every Life Script

I+/I− is the self-worth coordinate your Operating System runs on: whether you register as fundamentally okay (I+) or not-okay (I−) at baseline. Every Life Script is an attempt to move from I− to I+.

The coordinate underneath everything

Every Life Script is running an experiment. Trying to prove something. Trying to confirm a specific conclusion about what it means for you to be safe, worth keeping, fundamentally okay.

The experiment runs on a coordinate. Call it I+/I−.

I+ is the position of someone who registers as fundamentally okay, whose baseline sense of self doesn’t require constant proof. Who can fail, ask for help, or say no without that single act threatening his sense of worth. His worth is at baseline. It doesn’t need to be earned every day.

I− is the position of someone who doesn’t register as okay by default. Who needs to do something to earn belonging. The Warrior needs to be strong. The Achiever needs to be winning. The Pleaser needs to be useful. Without the evidence, the baseline drops back to not-okay. The script has to keep running to maintain the temporary I+ state.

Most successful men running a strong Life Script are running I− at baseline. The script is what generates the temporary I+, but only temporarily. The proof-loop has to keep running because the I+ doesn’t hold without constant evidence.

This is the engine underneath the engine. The Hidden Script is the specific strategy for getting from I− to I+. The I−/I+ coordinate is why the strategy is necessary at all.

What I− looks like in each script

I− in The Warrior
The baseline state when the Warrior isn't being strong. When he's resting without purpose, or asking for help, or visible in his struggle, something that feels like exposure or inadequacy surfaces. Not dramatic, usually. A low-grade sense of having lost the thing that makes him worth keeping around. This is the I− position. The strength is how he climbs back to I+.
I− in The Achiever
The baseline state when the Achiever isn't winning. When the scoreboard is blank, when he's between goals, when a failure becomes visible, the floor feels absent. Not depression necessarily, but a specific absence of solidity that the next win is supposed to supply. The baseline is not-good-enough-yet. The win is how he climbs to temporary I+.
I− in The Pleaser
The baseline state when the Pleaser isn't being useful. When he's in a relationship where he has nothing to give, or when he's said no and the guilt hasn't subsided, or when he's genuinely not sure what the person around him needs, a low-grade anxiety that he's in danger of being removed. The baseline is not-loved-unless-useful. The giving is how he climbs to temporary I+.

All three baseline positions share one structure: I+ is conditional. You earn it. Through strength, through winning, through usefulness. And because it’s earned rather than baseline, it doesn’t hold. It requires continuous re-earning.

This is the Cost Ledger in action. The energy cost of continuously re-earning I+ is what charges the energy line item. The relationship cost of relating to others primarily through the earning strategy is what charges the relationship line item. The meaning cost of never reaching a permanent I+ is what charges the meaning line item.

The I+/I− map across Life Scripts

How each Life Script manages the I−/I+ calculation
Script Baseline position Strategy to reach I+ What threatens it
The Warrior I−: not-needed-unless-strong Be the strong one. Handle it. Never visibly need anything. Being seen as needing help. Vulnerability exposed. Inability to handle something.
The Achiever I−: not-good-enough-yet Win. Produce more than expected. Stay ahead of the next threshold. Failing publicly. Wins that don't land. Being average or ordinary.
The Pleaser I−: not-loved-unless-useful Give. Read the room. Be what others need. Don't say no. Being seen as difficult or inconvenient. Saying no. Being without a role in others' lives.

The strategy each script uses to reach I+ is also the strategy that generates the Cost Ledger. The Warrior’s strength-as-I+-strategy produces the isolation cost. The Achiever’s winning-as-I+-strategy produces the meaning-empties cost. The Pleaser’s usefulness-as-I+-strategy produces the lost-access-to-own-wants cost.

There’s no cost-free version of this. You can’t run the I− baseline and not pay. The cost is built into the strategy.

Why the baseline matters more than the behavior

This is the reason behavior change alone doesn’t work.

A man can change the behavior: can ask for help (Warrior), can let a win land (Achiever), can say no (Pleaser). He can do this through willpower, through accountability, through a structure that enforces the new behavior. And then, when the structure relaxes, the behavior reverts.

Because the baseline is still I−. The behavioral change didn’t change the baseline. The system still reads as not-okay-by-default. The script is still the only available strategy for moving to I+. So the script restarts.

Where the baseline shows

The I−/I+ coordinate becomes clearest in the moments when the script fails.

Picture a ten-year company, by any measure successful, hitting a year where everything breaks. A near-fatal miss. Two key people leave. The visible track record has a gap in it for the first time.

That’s usually the moment the temporary I+ the Achiever was generating gets stripped away. Without it, the baseline shows. The I− is visible. Not-good-enough. Without the wins to prove otherwise.

That moment of I− visibility is the entry point. Not for fixing the wins, for working the baseline underneath them. The real question becomes: what would it take to be okay even when you’re not winning? Not a rhetorical question. The actual work.

What shifts at baseline

When the baseline shifts from I− toward I+, a few things become available that weren’t available before.

The script loses urgency. The Warrior can consider help without the body’s immediate resistance. The Achiever can have a win that lands and stays landed. The Pleaser can say no and feel okay after.

The Cost Ledger slows. The energy cost drops because the nervous system isn’t in constant re-earning mode. The relationship cost drops because the relationships are no longer primarily organized around the script’s strategy.

The wins start meaning something different. When the Achiever moves to I+ baseline, wins become evidence of capability rather than proof of worth. That’s a different experience. The win lands fully, without the immediate requirement to prove it again.

Access to what you actually want becomes possible. The Pleaser who moves to I+ baseline can start asking what he actually wants, without the answer being immediately overridden by what others need.

These shifts don’t happen from reading about them. They happen from a process. The blog gets you to recognition of the I−/I+ dynamic. The 1:1 work runs the actual upgrade.

Three starter moves toward I+ baseline

These don’t upgrade the baseline, but they create evidence the nervous system can start working with.

1. Catch the I− moment. When the script fires, when you decline help, push to win, or give to someone who didn’t ask, notice the baseline underneath. Not the behavior. The feeling right before the behavior. That’s the I− calculation. Just name it: I−.

2. Do the ruled-out behavior and observe the aftermath. The script predicts consequences from the I− position. Ask for help and notice that the feared consequence (loss of respect, loss of belonging) doesn’t arrive. Let a win land and notice that nothing collapses. Say no and notice that the relationship doesn’t end. Collect data that contradicts the I− calculation.

3. State one thing you’re okay about, unearned. Not what you’ve produced. Not what you’ve handled. Something you’re okay about just by being you. If nothing comes, that’s data. If something comes, notice how it feels to claim I+ without having earned it through the script’s strategy.

Frequently asked

What does I+/I− mean in SuperstateX?

I+ and I− describe the baseline self-worth position your Operating System runs on. I+ is the position of someone who registers as fundamentally okay, who doesn't need to prove worth to earn belonging. I− is the position of someone who registers as not-okay by default, who needs to do something (be strong, win, be useful) to earn belonging. Every Life Script is an attempt to move from I− to I+ through the script's specific strategy. The Warrior gets to I+ by being strong. The Achiever gets to I+ by winning. The Pleaser gets to I+ by being useful. The problem is that the I+ is temporary. The script keeps requiring new proof.

How do I know if I'm running I+ or I− at baseline?

The most reliable signal is what happens inside when you're not performing the script. When you're not being strong (Warrior), not winning (Achiever), not being useful (Pleaser), what does your baseline sense of yourself feel like? If there's a low-grade anxiety, a sense of being somehow less, a feeling that something needs to be proved or done, that's the I− position. If you register as basically okay regardless of what you're producing, that's closer to I+. Most men running a strong Life Script are running I− at baseline.

Is I+ a permanent state someone can reach?

The goal of the Operating System upgrade isn't to reach a permanent I+ that never wavers. It's to shift the baseline: to change the default from I− (not okay unless I'm proving something) to I+ (okay by default, capable of producing without needing the producing to confirm worth). The shift is real and durable when the layer underneath gets worked. It doesn't mean the script never fires. It means it fires with less urgency and without the same automatic behavioral compliance.

What's the relationship between I+/I− and the Hidden Script?

The Hidden Script is the specific strategy for getting from I− to I+. The Warrior's Hidden Script, "I get kept around as long as I don't need anything," is the Warrior's map for converting I− into temporary I+: be strong, don't need things, and you're okay. The Achiever's Hidden Script is the Achiever's map. The Pleaser's is the Pleaser's. The Hidden Script is the mechanism. I+/I− is the underlying calculation that makes the mechanism necessary.

Can you be I+ in some areas and I− in others?

Yes, and this is common. A man might be I+ in his professional identity, genuinely okay with his capability, not needing the wins to confirm worth, and I− in his relational or personal identity, where the script is still running hard. Partial I+ is real progress. Full baseline shift is what the work is aimed at. The 1:1 process identifies which domains still carry I− and works the Hidden Script calibrated to each.
